Hi Everyone,
Well it is 3:30am Monday. Mike got into Carmacks
and is very ill and he thinks he has the flu. Not
good. Besides Mike not feeling well Mugs came in
with a shoulder injury. He dropped her immediately
and I went to take care of her at the truck. I gave
her some food and a massage on her shoulder. She
wasn't eating great and when she peed I
noticed that is was very brown. When a dog's urine
is that brown it means either she is very dehydrated
(she wasn't that dry) or her muscles breaking down
which causes damage to the kidneys. I immediately
sought out the vets. They were very concerned
and suggested that I would need to go back to
Whitehorse to seek further treatment. They could
give her I.V. fluids, but she was going to need a
lot. The great vet team started an I.V. and we
talked about
what to do. Time would be a big factor on what to
do next. The vet team's job is to stabilize the
dogs and it is up to the musher and handler to seek
further medical assistance if needed. Many
people gave us advice on where we could get more
I.V. fluids without going to Whitehorse. After
receiving two liters of fluid her urine was clear
and they released her to me. Very stressful and
emotional. I will watch Mugs closely over the next
24 hours. Mike's mood was very low when he checked
in. Once again he surprised me by getting the team
ready and back onto the trail. He hit the trail at
1:23am Monday. Right before leaving Mike dropped
Curly with me since both his wrists were sore.
During the four hour rest he had massaged
and wrapped both wrists, but he was too sore to
continue on. The Quest
is always an emotional roller coaster and we are
along for the ride. It is so hard to see Mike
struggling and not having the fun he truly wishes he
was having. Again time will tell how this journey
ends, hopefully at the finish line, but I am very
proud of Mike and the team. No matter what happens
I know Mike will make the best decision for the team
and himself. Thanks for watching.
